Power-to-Gas: Make it simple.

Let’s start by quickly explaining power-to-gas: it starts with a reverse hydrogen shift reaction 2 H2O + energy = 2 H2 + O2, triggering the process 4 H2 + CO2 –> CH4 + 2 H2O or in other words ∆HR ⇌ –164.9 kJ/mol as the result, creating CH4. Makes sense? No? Good, that’s reassured us. This has actually got us right to the heart of the issue: How can you make a complex and technical, chemical process accessible to an audience interested in the subject so they can grasp what it means? This was precisely the challenge for our client Limeco, which constructed the first and largest industrially operated power-to-gas plant in Switzerland and engaged with us as a communication partner.

A flagship project buzzing with energy: Limeco’s new power-to-gas plant.

With the help of millions of microorganisms
Making complexity simple and summarising the key message is part of the daily grind at communications agencies. In the case of Limeco and its power-to-gas plant, it didn’t matter a jot that nobody in the GRIP team had much of an idea about chemistry or technology. In fact, this uncertainty was part of the successful solution. People’s curiosity was piqued: they got to grips with the topic and learned what power-to-gas actually is. In simple terms, hydrogen and millions of microorganisms are used to turn the CO2 created during the fermentation of sewage sludge into CO2-neutral biogas – a future-proof, renewable source of energy and a very clever approach from an

Metha, the biogas mascot
We’ll draw our chemistry crash course to a close now. Instead, we’ll refer you to the power-to-gas website developed and implemented by GRIP in collaboration with the agency Schmucki, where all the content is showcased in a user-friendly manner. Metha, the biogas mascot created by GRIP, takes website visitors by the hand and leads them through the individual topics with messages that get straight to the point. You can find out information quickly or in great depth.

Sure, we could now wrap up by going into all the details about the ways we’re still supporting Limeco in its communication. But we’ll leave that because, as we said, we’ve got to keep it simple. Instead, just check out powertogas.ch. As you’ll see, energy can genuinely be an exciting topic!
